Why / when should I see a counsellor?
There are many reasons why people seek counselling - life is complicated. There could be an issue at home, at work or at school. There may be a big life decision that you are weighing up. You may also just want to talk to an independent person who will listen. There are no issues too big or too small.
There is no shame or weakness in seeing a counsellor or therapist - only strength.
What is your area of speciality?
I work with men on a variety of issues - feelings of anxiety, relationship difficulties (at home or at work), inter-personal troubles, grief and loss, short terms goals.
In short - I work with men on what life throws at them.
Why do you see men only?
I took the decision to work with men only as there has traditionally been a number of barriers that have kept men from seeking help, one of which is the lack of male therapists in the field.
What actually happens in counselling?
A typical misconception about counselling and therapy is the notion that you come into the room, sit (or lie) down and the therapist asks immediately about your childhood. This is not the case! Counselling is all about the therapeutic alliance - I want us to work together on what is important to you.
That’s the work.
So, will you fix my problems?
A counsellor doesn’t ‘fix’ problems, unfortunately. However, I aim to facilitate change so that you can resolve your issues yourself. You’ve got this.
How many sessions will I need?
As with most things in life, that depends. You may have a short term goal which you need assistance with, or there may be something which needs more time. You may find the sessions helpful and you make it a regular appointment - or you may hate it and never come back!
Do you offer a Medicare rebate?
Unfortunately, counselling does not fall under the legislation for Mental Health Plans via Medicare. There are advantages to this however - quicker access to care, no referral needed and no permanent recording of any diagnoses on your health records, which may impact future insurance claims and policies as well as certain employment criteria.
Do you accept Private Health Insurance?
Check with your provider if you are entitled to a rebate through your fund, as this may vary depending on who you are with.
